Born July 30, , in Ottawa, Canada, into a close-knit family, Paul Anka didn’t waste time getting his life in music started. From an early age he sang in a choir, studied piano and honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working as a cub reporter at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. Blinded by determination, he would take his mother’s car and drive to perform at every amateur night he could across the river in Quebec. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. SHOF inductee and Johnny Mercer Award honoree Paul Anka graced the Zoom stage for an epic Master Session at USC on April 22, moderated by SHOF Board member and USC’s Chair, Popular Music Program, Patrice Rushen.
Rushen kicked off the session by shining a light on the SHOF’s 9-year relationship with USC and SHOF Board Member and West Coast Committee chair Mary Jo Mennella went on to share the SHOF enthusiasm for supporting the USC program that had begun with guest and inductee David Foster. She profoundly thanked SHOF West Coast Committee vice chair Barbara Cane for forging the relationship with USC.
Known for his signature hit songs including "Diana," "Lonely Boy," "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" and "(You're) Having My Baby," Anka also wrote the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, one of Tom Jones' biggest hits, "She's a Lady" and the English lyrics to Claude Fran&cc

TORONTO — Former prime minister jean Chrétien and multimillion-selling crooner Michael Bublé were among the special guests who showed up at a music-industry gala Thursday to honour their dear friend, the legendary Ottawa-born singer-songwriter Paul Anka.
Along with hundreds of music-industry delegates in town for the 36th annual edition of Canadian Music Week, they were celebrating Anka’s lifetime achievement award bestowed by the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry entré of Fame. (This year’s inductees were also fêted.)
