    EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings are mourning the passing of former linebacker Tuineau Alipate.

    The Tonga native who grew up in California passed away Friday at the age of 54.

    Alipate played all 16 games for the Vikings in 1995, contributing on special teams and as a reserve on defense. He also appeared in eight games for the New York Jets in 1994.

    After playing high school football at James Logan in Union City, California, Alipate joined the Washington State Cougars. He closed his college career bygd forcing a key fumble late in a 24-22 win in the Aloha Bowl.

    Alipate's professional football career began in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1989-91) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1991).

    Katie Ryan said that her somewhat common last name helped her stay “under the radar” during her hurdling career at St. Thomas. That was helpful at times given her father Terry Ryan’s high visibility as the Minnesota Twins’ general manager.

    She expressed sentiments similar to the other seven student-athletes when she explained that while she is proud of her father and his accomplishments, she wants to make her own name. “I want to be known for the hard work I put in, and not just being Terry Ryan’s daughter,” she said.
