Born in , Ida grew up in a comfortable home in northwestern Pennsylvania. Her father developed wooden tanks for storing oil, and then became an independent refiner himself. When John D. Rockefeller made secret deals with major railroads, most of the competition in the area were forced to sell out to him.
Not Tarbell. But his business partner committed suicide, and things were rough for the family. In the meantime Rockefeller repeated his tactics in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York, building up the Standard Oil monopoly.

Time for the Plural Sector
What is frequently called the “third sector” turns out to be surprisingly obscure. No wonder, with vague labels like this one. What does third sector mean to most people? This sector deserves a better name, and it deserves greater recognition of the critical role it will have to play in restoring balance in this troubled world.
What might best be called the &#;plural sector” (more later on why) has been consistently excluded from the great debates of our time—over left versus right, public sector governments versus private sector markets, nationalization versus privatization (as if these two sectors are the only homes for our important institutions). People argue about the need for government control of health care services to insure equality, compared with leaving control to the marketplace for the sake of efficiency, without recognizing how many of these services are actually supplied by community institutions in

Assembling a Guerrilla Movement
We had a mandate to do more. First step: put some flesh on the bones of the idea to create a new hybrid business that would effectively turn the classical management consultancy model upside down. A business model that was based around a three-way contribution: Accenture provides access to its high performers free of profit and corporate overhead; these employees voluntarily give up a substantial percentage of their salary; and non-profits would cut a check to Accenture for consulting and technology services at significantly reduced rates, with no reduction in quality for those services. The diagram below illustrates these three contributions from Accenture (ACN in the diagram), employee participants and clients.
