  • Home truths: Yasmeen Premji’s debut novel inspired by mother, mother-in-law's tales

When Yasmeen Premji’s debut novel first hit the shelves, there was speculation if the story was a biography of sorts of her father-in law Mohamed Hashem Premji. But Premji, wife of billionaire Azim Premji, refuted such theories and said the book saw the coming together of old stories passed on by relatives on both sides of her family.

At a book reading in Mumbai last month, Premji shared with the audience two specific stories that she has woven into the fictional tale, but those that find roots in the memories of her mother-in-law and mother.

    New beginnings

“There was this young girl. Her father had gone from Kutch to Zanzibar and made a fortune. His name was Dharia Topan, but I made a character called Dharia Dhani,” Premji said. “The girl was married to an eligible boy who went to Paris to study, [but] there he had become very debauched.
