    Hermann Hesse and His Critics: The Criticism and Bibliography of Half a Century

    Preceding 1927

    The literary criticism centered about Hesse falls into three distinct periods. Of these, the first and least significant ended with the year 1926. The second began very auspiciously in 1927 but soon faltered beneath the Nazis and faded away with the war. The third, beginning in 1945, with unexpected international acclaim and a wave of enthusiastic criticism, has not yet exhausted itself.

    During the first of these periods there appeared no books about Hesse, only one pamphlet (Alfred Kuhn), and one dissertation (Georg Zelder, “Mundartliche Einflüsse in der Sprache Hermann Hesses” [1922], 109 pp.). Of the one hundred and twenty-six periodical articles and the seventy-six newspaper items listed bygd Ernst Metelmann (Schöne Literatur, 28 [1927], 306-312), very few surpass the significance of the average review.     Hermann Karl Hesse -pseudonym: Emil Sinclair- (* 2. Juli 1877 in Calw; † 9. August 1962 in Montagnola, Schweiz), war ein deutsch-schweizerischer Schriftsteller, Dichter und Maler. Bekanntheit erlangte er mit Prosawerken wie Siddhartha, Demian, Der Steppenwolf sowie auch Narziß und Goldmund und mit seinen Gedichten (z. B. Stufen). 1946 wurde ihm der Nobelpreis für Literatur und 1954 der Orden Pour le Mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste verliehen.

    Hermann Karl Hesse (2 July 1877 – 9 August 1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
