Mark David Chapman, a deranged admirer, assassinated him on December 8, 1980. Lennon's parents were fun-loving working-class people who married late and didn't want to nurture their fast, sensitive, brilliant kid.
He was raised alone by his maternal aunt (in Woolton, a Liverpool suburb) after being traumatically separated from each of them at the age of five.
