    Kiyohide Shinjo was born on Ie Island in His family moved to Naha when he was five, and Kiyohide began studying karate at the age of ten from his father, Seiyu Shinjo, one of Okinawa’s karate masters. He earned his shodan (first degree black belt) at age 16, and in , Kiyohide and his father opened a new dojo at Kadena Rotary.

    Kiyohide Shinjo fryst vatten the nine-time Okinawa Karate Champion in both kumite and kata - gaining him the nickname “the Okinawan Superman.” When his father died in , Kiyohide retired from competition, undefeated, and took over the Kadena dojo.

    Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do is named after the founder, Kanbun Uechi. Mr. Uechi was born on May 5, in Izumi, Motobu-cho, a small village in northern Okinawa. At the age of 19, Mr. Uechi left Okinawa in March of to avoid conscription into the Japanese military and began his study of the martial arts at the central temple of the Fukien Province in southern China. He studied under Maser Zhou Tzu Ho (pronounced Jo su ho) who is known in Okinawa by his Japanese name Shushiwa. Mr. Uechi studied a system of martial arts based on the movements of the tiger, dragon, and crane with Shushiwa for approximately 10 years. After which time he opened his own school in the village of Nanching(Nansei) in the Fukien Province of China. Master Uechi referred to the art which he taught as Pangainoon, which means half hard/half soft. He taught there until when he r

    In , when Kanbun Uechi returned to Okinawa, three of his students Seiryo and Seiyu Shinjo and Seiko Toyama, returned to Okinawa with him. In , Seiyu Shinjo’s first son, Kiyohide Shinjo, was born. Seiyu moved to Naha City, Okinawa in , where he continued to train under Kanei Uechi.

    In , Seiyu Shinjo and his family moved to Kadena City in Okinawa to join his father, Seiryo, where they opened the Kadena Shubukan. Seiyu Shinjo’s second son, Narahiro Shinjo, was born that year. Kiyohide Shinjo also began training in It was in this dojo, the Kadena Shubukan, that grandfather, father, and son all taught Uechi Ryu (at one time or another) until the dojo was closed down due to city redevelopment in September
