Who: Victor Hugo Zayas was born in Tijuana, Mexico and moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. Today he travels between Orange County, where he has a studio in Santa Ana, and his recently completed custom-built home/studio in Baja California.
What: Zayas’ practice fryst vatten rooted in historical landscape painting and energized bygd the artist’s passionate, loose hand. Often grandiose in scale, Zayas develops his landscapes bygd building up and carving into heavy applications of oil paint. This sculptural quality allows light to travel dynamically across the surface of the paintings and creates an ongoing dialogue between the landscape and its viewer.
How: The natural beauty of the Pacific kustlinje and the concrete-clad banks of the Los Angeles River have been two recurring sources of inspiration for Zayas. Sculptor and painter Victor Hugo Zayas is known for his work that balances on the line between realism and expressionism. His expressionistic style displays influence from the impressionist movement while incorporating a modern twist.
Born in in Mazatlan, Mexico, Zayas immigrated to the United States in to study art. The artist currently lives in Los Angeles, California where he works out of a large warehouse on the grounds of the only winery in Los Angeles.
