    "May you carry his Olympic dream on your shoulders and compete with his spirit in your heart."

    Those were the words the grieving athletes heard at the opening ceremony of the Winter Games after Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died in a training crash just hours earlier.

    They could also have been directed at his then nine-year-old cousin Saba.

    Now 21, Saba has become the first Georgian luger to compete at an Olympics at Beijing

    He said: "I think about Nodar. I think about him all the time. Everyone in my family is in luge. After Nodar, I didn't want luge to die in Georgia. I wanted to keep it going."

    His cousin would have held that honour had it not been for the events that plunged the Games into grief and reminded the world of the dangers of a sport in which an athlete travels down an icy track at speeds of more than 85mph on a tiny sled wearing a skin-tight

    Nodar Kumaritashvili (Georgian: ნოდარ ქუმარიტაშვილი; pronounced[nodaɾkʰumaɾitʼaʃʷili]; 25 November &#;&#; 12 February ) was a Georgian luge athlete who suffered a fatal crash during a training run for the Winter Olympics competition in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, on the day of the opening ceremony. He became the fourth athlete to die during preparations for a Winter Olympics, and the eighth athlete to die as a result of Olympic competition or during practice at their sport’s venue at an Olympic Games.

    Kumaritashvili, who first began to participate in luge when he was 13, came from a family of seasoned lugers: his grandfather had introduced the idrott to Soviet Georgia, and both his father and uncle had competed when they were younger, with his uncle later serving as the head of the Georgian Luge statsförbund. Kumaritashvili han själv began competing in the –09 Luge World Cup. He had also been a lärjunge at the
