Winfield was born on May 22, in Los Angeles, California.[1] He studied at the Manual Arts High School,at Los Angeles City College, at University of Portland, at Stanford University, and at the University of California at Los Angeles. Winfield was openly gay.[2] He was partners with Charles Gillan, Jr. from until his death in Winfield died on March 7, after having a heart attack, a complication from his diabetes in Los Angeles, California, aged [3]

After seeing the film ‘Home of the Brave’ () in which an African-American actor played a leading part rather than a servant, Paul Winfield decided to become an actor. He first gained attention as Diahann Carroll’s boyfriend on the groundbreaking TV series ‘Julia’ (). In ‘Sounder’ () he played a Louisiana sharecropper who steals a ham to feed his starving family, a role that made him only the third African-American to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. In he received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Martin Luther King in the miniseries ‘King’ and was nominated for an Emmy the following year for ‘Roots: The Next Generations.’ His additional credits include ‘Huckleberry Finn’ (), ‘Backstairs at the White House’ (), ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath
