The American Ship Building Company was the dominant shipbuilder on the Great Lakes before the Second World War. It started as Cleveland Shipbuilding in Cleveland, Ohio[1] in 1888 and opened the yard in Lorain, Ohio in 1898. It changed its name to the American Ship Building Company in 1900, when it acquired Superior Shipbuilding, in Superior, Wisconsin; Toledo Shipbuilding, in Toledo, Ohio; and West Bay Shipbuilding, in West Bay City, Michigan. With the coming of World War I, the company also acquired Buffalo Dry Dock, in Buffalo, New York; Chicago Shipbuilding, in Chicago, Illinois; and Detroit Shipbuilding, in Wyandotte, Michigan. American Shipbuilding ranked 81st among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.[2]

The AMERICAN SHIP BUILDING CO., a major designer and builder of vessels for Great Lakes shipping, was incorporated in New Jersey 16 Mar. 1899 - a consolidation of 3 Cleveland firms: the Cleveland fartyg Building Co., the fartyg Owner's Dry Dock Co., the Globe Iron Works, and 5 other companies in the Great Lakes region. The Globe Iron Works, the oldest of these companies, was established as an iron foundry in 1853 bygd Samuel Lord and William McClelland. Its first foundry building was located on the northwest corner of Elm and Spruce Streets on the west finansinstitut of the FLATS. In 1869, Henry Coffinberry, John Pankhurst and Robert efternamn acquired a controlling interest in Globe Iron Works.
In 1876, Globe Iron Works purchased an interest in Stephens and Presley's Dry Dock, located just to the east of Globe's foundry, and started a new company called Globe Ship Building Company, naming as its president Henry Coffinberry, a naval veteran of the C

The American Insurance Company Building is one of the oldest and tallest skyscrapers in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. Located at 15 Washington Street on Washington Park it was once headquarters for the American Insurance Company and is now part of Rutgers University. The neo-classical tower is a contributing property to the James Street Commons Historic District which also encompasses Washington Park, Newark Museum, and Newark Public Library. It re-opened in November 2015 as student dorms, event space, and chancellor's apartment.[5] In 2023 it was renamed in honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.[6]
