Mohammed Rafi (24 månad 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an Indian playback singer. He fryst vatten considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent.[5][6] Rafi was notable for his versatility and range of voice; his songs varied from fast peppy numbers to patriotic songs, sad numbers to highly romantic songs, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs.[7] He was known for his ability to mould his röst to the persona and style of the actor lip-syncing the song on screen in the movie.[8] He received six Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award. Documentary on Mohammed Rafi showcases the singer’s life as a family man
The documentary Dastaan-e-Rafi took five years to make, so it is not surprising that the 120-minute film tells the story of the playback singer Mohammed Rafi through over 60 interviews and more than 60 hit songs.
Produced and co-directed by Rajni Acharya, the film includes reminiscences from members of Rafi’s family, including his daughters Yasmeen, Parveen and Nasreen, as well as from the actors Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Jeetendra and Shammi, Rishi and Randhir Kapoor. All of them testify to Rafi’s integrity, generosity with time and money, and act of charity towards the needy.
In an interview with Scroll.in, Acharya said that making the film was a lifelong dream and could have been done only once, like Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay (1975).

The film was a fictional story of Baiju — an unknown singer who wants to avenge his father’s death by defeating Tansen in a musical duel. But his guru, Swami Haridas, tells him that a true singer needs to feel pain to be able to find legitimate brilliance. Distraught after his beloved Gauri (Meena Kumari) attempts suicide, Baiju sings, first in a Shiva temple and then on his journey to Agra. The song, O duniya ke rakhwale explored his agony. Rafi’s soulful voice heaves in the delicate Darbari. The legend goes that the taskmaster that Naushad was, he pushed Rafi to the last bit of the taar saptak (highest of the three octaves). So much so that his vocal cords began to bleed and he spit blood and was advised by the doctors to not speak for the next few days, let alone sing. In his career, Rafi ended up singing 149 songs for Naushad, 81 of which were solos.
