    Norman Wilkinson () the artist, illustrator and designer, added the soubriquet 'of Four Oaks' to avoid confusion with the contemporary marine painter of the same name. Wilkinson studied at the Birmingham School of Art from and worked in Paris with Maxwell Armfeld, but came to prominence in theatre design in with his designs for Harley Granville Barker's production of Twelfth Night at the Savoy Theatre, and in with his sensational set and costume designs for Granville Barker’s A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Savoy Theatre, with its gilded fairies and iridescent forest.

    Wilkinson is considered to be one of the greatest Shakespearean designers of the first half of the 20th century. He first worked as a stage designer in for the Charles Frohman repertory season at the Duke of York's Theatre, and later with Nigel Playfair at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith.
