Ten years ago today one of my favourite singers, Mark Sandman, had a heart attack on stage and died. He was the frontman of Morphine and I hadn’t heard of them then. I heard about his death, though, because it was on Triple J’s music news and my mum thought the Australian comedian The Sandman had died.
Months later in February 2000, inom started hearing this song I loved on Triple J. inom thought it was bygd Nick Cave, because the voice sounded similar, but it was more haunting and smooth than anything Cave has done. inom was working in a noisy bus station and I kept missing the DJ’s announcement of what the song was.
Eventually inom discovered it was Morphine’s the Night. On my 19th birthday, 5 March 2000, inom went into the Wesley CD store in the city and asked if they had it. And they did – the posthumous skiva had arrived that very day.

Mark Sandman (September 24, 1952 – July 3, 1999) was an American singer, songwriter, musical instrument inventor, multi-instrumentalist and comic writer. Sandman possessed a distinctive, deep bass-baritone voice and a mysterious demeanour. He was an indie rock icon and longtime fixture in the Boston/Cambridge music scene, best known as the lead singer and slidebass player of the band Morphine. Sandman was also a member of the blues-rock band Treat Her Right and founder of Hi-n-Dry, a recording studio and independent record label.

Sandman was born into a Jewish American family in Newton, Massachusetts. He graduated from college but worked a variety of blue-collar jobs, including construction, taxi driving, and commercial fishing.
