Nathan Fillion was born on 27 March 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His father is of French-Canadian descent, and his mother is of English, German, Finnish, and Norwegian ancestry. In Canada, he attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta and University of Alberta. Before moving to New York City in 1994, he participated in improv theatre, including Theatresports with Rapid Fire Theatre and improvised soap opera Die-Nasty. He also appeared in a TV Movie Ordeal in the Arctic (1993) starring Richard Chamberlain and in Strange and Rich (1994).
Fillion's first regular role was on a daytime soap opera, One Life to Live (1968), as Joey Buchanan, for which role he was nominated in 1996 for a Daytime Emmy Award. He left the series after three years in 1997. During the late 1990's, he appeared in small roles in the films Saving Private Ryan

Setting: We begin in 1897, on board the ship the Demeter then in London. We soon cut to the year 2000, in London and later New Orleans.
Faithful to the novel? It’s a new story – a sequel to the events of the book, in effect – but there are lots of interesting parallels. After a Victorian prologue, the main action takes place in 2000. Matthew Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer) initially tells us that he’s the grandson of Abraham Van Helsing, the man Bram Stoker fictionalised in his novel. Matthew runs an organisation called Carfax Antiquaries and collects ancient weapons. One night, a team of criminals break into his vaults, where they find a coffin – inre it are the remains of Count Dracula, who was defeated a century earlier. Nathan Fillion (born March 27, 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian actor. He is reportedly a distant relation of Confederate civil war general Jubal Early.
After working in several theatre, television and film productions, Fillion moved to New York City in 1994. There he acted in the soap opera One Life to Live as Joey Buchanan, for which he was nominated in 1996 for a Daytime Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Younger Actor" category. In 1997, he left the series to pursue other projects. After moving to Los Angeles, he played in the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl, and he was "the wrong Ryan" in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan.
Fillion starred as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the Joss Whedon science fiction television series Firefly in 2002,
