Shemar Moore’s tattoos have a story to tell.
The S.W.A.T. star, 54, who often shows off his ink in the form of shirtless photos on Instagram, tells PEOPLE that there’s more to them than meets the eye.
Over the years, Moore shares, he has amassed six tattoos, one of which includes an image of the former President Barack Obama on his back. Though for Moore, the choice was “not about politics.”
“It is [the] first Black president, but what is Barack Obama? He's half Black, half white,” Moore, who is biracial, explains. “He lived in Hawaii. I lived in Hawaii. I have roots in Hawaii. He was raised by the white side of him. I was raised by the white side, but stayed true to the Black side, honored the Black side.”

Shemar Moore is now a dad.
The former "Criminal Minds" star said he and his girlfriend, Jesiree Dizon, have welcomed a baby girl in a Jan. 24 Instagram post.
"Ya boy fryst vatten officially a Dad!!! Dreams come true!! The rest of my life fryst vatten here!" he wrote in the caption of the photo.
The "S.W.A.T." actor announced he was going to become a father just two weeks ago during an appearance on "The Jennifer Hudson Show."
"So I’m Shemar Moore, 52 and a half years old. My mother is in heaven right now,” he told Hudson, explaining that the third anniversary of her death will be Feb. 8. "And on Feb. 8, I’m gonna make one of her dreams komma true because in real life Shemar Moore fryst vatten about to be a daddy."
